Dear Members of the McKinley Family,
We would like to let you know about the fun and charitable events planned for the McKinley family for the first half of this school year.
First, our school is partnering with the March of Dimes Foundation to participate in our Second Annual McKinley WonderWalk on Tuesday, October 24th. The March of Dimes WonderWalk is a mini walk in which the children take a short stroll on school grounds and ask friends or relatives to sponsor them for walking. Students are encouraged to ask friends and family, NOT STRANGERS, to support them. WonderWalk is a fun, safe, educational and rewarding way for students to make a difference in their community and to fundraise for programs that ensure all babies can be given a healthy start in life. Each homeroom teacher will receive an envelope to collect money from their homeroom. The homeroom that collects the most money will receive a surprise as thanks for participating. All participants are asked to wear purple on the 24th to show their support. For more information see Ms. Madonia or Ms. Cooper.
On Friday, October 27th, the SGO hosts our first school dance THE BOO BASH from 3-5pm. Suggested contribution for the dance is $3 per student. THE BOO BASH is the only time in which students are allow costumes to McKinley. Costumes may not be worn during the day, nor can they include full face masks or any sort of weapon as props. Suggested contribution for the dance is $3. Tickets will be available during morning advisory and lunch in the Dean’s Office. For more information please see Ms. Cooper or Ms. Smith.
Ms. Madonia and the I Love Me Campaign are hosting their annual BOO BAKESALE on Tuesday, October 31st. Proceeds from the Boo Bakesale are donated to various children’s charities to be determined by Ms. Madonia and the participants. We are asking for donations of baked goods, treats, and snacks to sell in the sale. Ms. Madonia will begin collecting treats starting on Monday, October 30th in the Guidance Suite. For more information please see Ms. Madonia or Ms. Rousseau in room 202.
In November, our school partners with the Movember Organization for our Movember at McKinley fundraisers. Movember is a global non-profit whose goal is to fundraise for men’s cancers and health initiatives. Their motto is “Changing the face of men’s health.” This organization replaces the usual ribbons used to promote awareness with mustaches. Those who can grow them are asked to do so and those who can’t are asked to support whoever they can to fundraise and promote awareness. Closer to the event, we will also share a link for our school's personalized fundraising page where donations can be online.
At the end of the month, the homeroom that collects the most money will receive a surprise as thanks for participating. Friday, November 17th, from 3-5 pm is our Move for Movember Dance and Wednesday, November is Movember at McKinley Day. Suggested contribution for the dance is $3. Every student and teacher that donates at least $1 will receive a fake mustache to wear for Movember Day. Donations can be made online, or to Ms. Cooper in room 137 or Ms. Smith in room 123.
Also in November we start our annual food drive to benefit local food pantries. Our food drive begins on November 1 and will run through December with pick up dates scheduled monthly. We are collecting only non-perishable food items and nothing in glass containers to help our local food pantry to be able to help those who are less fortunate in our community. Contributions can be left in room 136.
In December, the I Love Me Campaign & The Leadership Club will collect new or gently used toys in our Annual Toy Drive so that children in need may have a happy holiday season. We accept toys and gifts for all ages but ask that families please do not donate stuffed animals. Donations can be left in room 136 or in the Guidance Suite.
In January, we begin our penny harvest for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Each homeroom teacher will receive a donation box to collect money from their homeroom. Closer to the event, we will also share a link for our school's personalized fundraising page where donations can be made online. At the end of the month, the homeroom that collects the most money will receive a surprise as thanks for participating. Please see Ms. Cooper or Ms. Smith for more information.
That’s all for now, but you can expect another letter from us in January about what we have planned for the spring. We thank you in advance for helping McKinley make a difference in our community and hope that you have a happy and safe school year.
