Chess Champs!!! Go McKinley Lions!!!!

McKinley Chess Team Wins CIS Project Chess City Council Cup Tournament at PS 503!




 

The McKinley Lions chess team took home gold in a total team effort at the CIS Project Chess City Council Cup on Saturday, May 21st at P.S. 503.  The entire Chess team represented McKinley extremely well fielding 35 competitors and capturing 1st overall in the JH 6-8 UR Section as well as an impressive 4th place in the Open Section.

 

Oscar Sanchez (Class 800) led McKinley to 1st place out of 14 JH teams from around New York City in the JH 6-8 UR Section.  Sanchez placed 3rd overall earning an individual trophy with a stellar 4-0 record pacing the championship team comprised of William Lin (Class 800 – 13th overall, 3 wins), Alen Music (Class 613 – 14th overall, 3 wins), and Jin Yang Sun (Class 706 – 15th overall, 3 wins).  Other McKinley medalists who factored into the tie-breaker for the victory included: Brian Too (Class 800 - 3 wins), Marco Petroni (Class 600 - 3 wins), Leon Chen (Class 710 – 3 wins), Phi Ngyugen (Class 801 – 3 wins), Yu Ting Zheng (Class 702 – 3 wins), Matthew Ma (Class 702, 2.5 wins), and Mark Khelemsky (Class 600 – 2.5 wins). 

 

Winnie Wu (Class 702) finished an impressive 6th place overall winning a medal for the second straight year in the JH-HS Open Section with a record of 3-1.  Owen Ochoa (Class 817) earned a medal placing 15th overall in the Open section (3-1); and Andy Lin (Class 704) rounded out the 4th place JH-HS Open team with a 2-2 record.  

 

Congrats to the entire McKinley Lions Chess team for competing with intensity and integrity throughout the four-round tournament.
