The Hour of Code

posted Nov 29, 2017, 5:00 AM by Joanna Gillen   [ updated Nov 29, 2017, 5:08 AM ]

We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. However, only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.

That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). Our Hour of Code is making a statement that McKinley is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. All classes will be given the opportunity to participate in an hour of code (or more!) during this  week!

See http://hourofcode.com/us for more details.

November Reminders

posted Nov 17, 2017, 11:46 AM by Joanna Gillen   [ updated Nov 17, 2017, 11:49 AM ]

In November, our school partners with the Movember organization (http://movember.org) for our Movember at McKinley fundraiser.  Movember is a global non-profit whose goal is to fundraise for men’s cancers and health initiatives.  Their motto is “Changing the face of men’s health.”  This organization replaces the usual ribbons used to promote awareness with mustaches.  Those who can grow them are asked to do so and those who can’t are asked to support whoever they can to fundraise and promote awareness.  We will award prizes for the classes that raise the most money. November 22 is Movember at McKinley Day.  Every student and teacher that donates money will receive a fake mustache to wear for the day. Donations can be made to Ms. Cooper or via our school's Movember link https://mosista.co/ThePrideofBayRidge?mc=1

Also in November we have our annual food drive to benefit local food pantries.  Our food drive began on November 1st. We are collecting only non-perishable food items and nothing in glass containers to help our local food pantry to be able to help those who are less fortunate in our community. Contributions can be left in room 136
